None of his family or his extended family of workers can believe that he is no longer with us. Full of Life was he, and on November 20 th 2005, God took him away from all of us. It is still hard to reconcile and accept the fact that he is never going to come back in his physical form. The kind of person that he was and the life that he lived was exemplary. Wherever he is, we are sure that he watching over and taking care of all of us!
A couple of years ago, at a rotary meeting, a workshop was being conducted where all the participants were asked to write out their own obituary. Col Anant Bir Singh wrote "Yes! Here was a man". Simple and yet very powerful words, that were read out to all the participants. Col Singh lived a life that was exceptional, which is evidenced by the fact that over 1,500 people came at short notice for his funeral and over 4,500 people came for his Antim Ardas. "Never has the Sector 8 Gurudwara witnessed such huge crowds in the thirty years that I have been here," remarked one of the Granthis. Col Singh associated with people from all walks of life with the same dignity and genuine concern.
People who came to pay their respects included, the Current Punjab Governor, the past Governor General Chibber, the current GOC Western Command Gen Daljit Singh, PRIP Raja Saboo, Col Singh's extended family and other friends from all walks of life which included a cobbler who sat near one of his restaurants and closed his business for the day to be present at the cremation of this Great Man. His obituary was covered in all the major papers, and one news header aptly stated "A giant oak that fell without warning".
Col Singh joined the Indian Army at the tender age of 15 and was commissioned as an officer at the age of 19 in 1953. He continued his education and finished his engineering degree during the earlier years of his military career. During his 23 years of service in the Army he held a number of prestigious offices: Instructor at the IMA, Brigade Major of a Mountain Brigade, commanded a regiment at Ranchi and Meerut and served in the Army HQ at New Delhi. While posted at New Delhi, Col Singh realized that the Army retires a person at a very early age, but late enough to start another career, thus Col Singh applied for premature retirement. He felt that one might as well start another career as young as possible, so as to be able to put in the requisite hours & toil for making a successful venture. Hot Millions was an idea with Col Singh but the inspiration came from his wife Harinder Mohini, whose initials HM is what make the name Hot Millions. He ran the business with tremendous amount of hard work, humility, self sacrifice, confidence and honesty. His devotion to his family his employees is what we thank god for, he worked hard all his life and was a role model to be emulated. As a result of this now Hot Millions has grown exponentially over the years, and continues to grow.
He was full of life and loved good food! Keeping alive his love for good food we have now opened his pet project of a fine dine Indian Restaurant and have dedicated this restaurant to him. It is aptly called AB's. |
